Train a child

Tracey Easton (Kindergarten)
Welcome to Elizabethtown Christian Academy! My name is Tracey Easton and I have the privilege of being your child's teacher for the 2009-2010 school year. Your child can refer to me as Ms. Tracey. To get acquainted, here is a little information about me. My degree is in education from University of Kentucky. I have been working with children for 25+ years in the school setting, rehabilitation, a childrens' hospital and daycare. My husband (of many years) and I have a 13 year old son. As a family we enjoy traveling by RV, golf and fishing. My personal favorites are teaching, horseback riding and gardening. As the year progresses I look forward to getting to know each of you. My 'door' will always be open to you and I encourage you to contact me with any question or concern.

Melissa Lee (Teacher Assistant/Kindergarten)
Hello, my name is Melissa Lee. This is my first year with ECA. I am looking forward to working with all of you this year. In my life, I try to order my priorities in this sequence: God, Family, Career, and then everything else.

During my senior year of college, my Christian roommate and I attended Vespers at the Baptist Student Union where we heard a very humorous sermon from a local pastor. Afterwards, we decided to visit his church along with another friend. While attending his church that Sunday, his sermon pierced my heart as if he were speaking directly to me even though I had never met him. Although I had questions regarding the difference between free will and predestination, I went forward and gave my life to Christ. Later, I met with the pastor concerning the age-old debate between free will and predestination. I gained a better understanding of the two theologies. Since then, I have been serving the Lord through missions, VBS (Vacation Bible School), PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel), and teaching at Christian schools.

Originally, I am from Louisiana where I grew up. I graduated from Northeast Louisiana University with a degree in secondary education in 1990, and taught junior high, high school, and at the university (as a graduate assistant).

After marrying my husband 17 years ago, we moved to Fort Knox where he served in various positions with the Army for approximately seven years (1993-2000). During the seven years at Fort Knox, I taught Kindergarten at Christian Heritage Community School (1/1994-6/1996), completed another bachelor’s degree – Elementary Education, and taught one year of first grade at Rineyville Elementary.

After moving to Texas in 2000, I enjoyed volunteering, teaching a Ladies Bible Study class, and having our only child, Nathan. He is the joy of my life and is currently going into second grade. Before Nathan was a year old, we moved overseas to England for two years where we had the opportunity to travel extensively.

In 2005, we returned to Kentucky where we have made our home since my husband’s retirement from the Army. I remained a stay-at-home mother until recently when I endeavored to restart my teaching career. I have worked with Rineyville, Woodland, and G. C. Burkhead Elementary Schools. Currently, I am planning to take courses toward the completion of my master’s degree from Western Kentucky University.

Christian schools are needed to build and strengthen Christian foundations in our children. The Bible states in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not turn from it” (NIV). Christian schools help to lead our children to Christ and mature them spiritually. Christian schools provide continuity for children by teaching the same Christian principles and values at school that are taught in a Christ-centered home.

I am glad to be working in a Christian School. Teaching at a Christian school provides me with a safe environment where I may speak freely about my faith in Jesus Christ without fear of repercussions. A Christian school gives me the opportunity to use my God-given talents, abilities, and spiritual gifts to serve the Lord. This allows me to tithe my time as well as my finances.

Heather Angus (1st Grade)
I am the new first grade teacher here at ECA and I am thrilled to be here.  I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior in 1993, just after serving in the US ARMY.  I have experience as a worship team leader and a kid's church leader.  I have four children and a wonderful husband.  We all live in Elizabethtown.  I have one year experience as a 1st grade teacher and two years as an instructional assistant prior to seeking my degree.  I love music and have found it to be a positive teaching tool in the classroom, so don't be surprised to hear your child humming tunes when he/she reunites with you at the end of the day!

Monica Kisselbaugh (1st Grade)
I am married to Scott and have two beautiful children Madison and Jack. I've taught different grades off and on for 14 years, and am beginning my 7th year at ECA. I became a Christian in 1983 after a teacher shared the gospel with me. I am excited to continue sharing Christ with children.

Sandy Stinnett (2nd Grade)
Hello, I am Sandy Stinnett, the second grade teacher at E.C.A. I have been employed here for eleven years. For the nine years prior I was the Assistant Director and Preschool Teacher for Severns Valley Baptist Church. My education consists of an Associate Degree in Business from Elizabethtown Community College, a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Campbellsville College, and twenty four hours completed toward a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University.

I live in Elizabethtown with my husband, Danny, and my two daughters Amanda age 21 and Amy age 16. We are animal lovers. We have six Tennessee Walker horses, a Chocolate Lab, a 27 lb. cat (No kidding), a Dwarf rabbit, and fish. In my spare time, when I can find it, I enjoy reading. I have been a member of Severns Valley Baptist Church for thirty four years.

Second graders are inquisitive, imaginative, and enthusiastic. They are very enjoyable to teach. Every day is interesting, I never know what to expect. Second grade is a time of transition into being more responsible for themselves, their actions, their school work, and their relationship with others. It is also a time that many students become more aware of their relationship with God.

My goal is to provide students with positive learning experiences, both intellectual and spiritual, in an atmosphere where they feel safe, respected and loved. This enables them to learn and grow to the best of their ability.

I do expect students to be kind and respectful to everyone. Students are also expected to use good manners at all times. My intentions are to make this school year fun, interesting and productive. I am excited to begin a new year.

Kim Kerr (3rd Grade)
Hello! I hope you had a great summer full of fun, adventure, and some time to relax. While summer is a great time for fun and relaxation, I enjoy getting back into the routines of the school year. I am looking forward to a new year of learning and fun.

As we begin a new year, I would like to tell you a few things about myself. I am married to my high school sweetheart, Scott. We have been married for 22 years and we have 4 children, Andy, Jacob, Joshua, and Emily. Scott has been the Senior Pastor at Valley Creek Baptist Church for 7 years.

Over 15 years ago, Scott and I felt God calling us into a life of ministry. I enjoy teaching third grade for many reasons. Helping students realize their potential is exciting and inspiring. The students are amazed when they see what they are capable of accomplishing.

In the third grade, the students will spend the first few weeks reviewing. Then we will be ready to move quickly into new material. The students will be learning many new concepts in math. By the end of the year, the students will learn multiplication facts up through the 12 table, long division, adding and subtracting fractions, converting measurements, some geometry, and some basic algebra.

In language arts, we will spend time on reading comprehension and answering comprehension questions with complete sentences. The students will also learn some literary terms. Along with reading, we will be learning some writing techniques and the students will practice writing more complex (third grade) sentences. We will review and learn parts of speech, such as, nouns, pronouns, subjects, verbs, and adjectives.

We will be spending the first semester in science. We will be studying many topics, such as, animal classifications, plants, weights and measures, and space. The students usually enjoy this semester because there are many hands-on activities, experiments and projects.

During the second semester, we will be studying history. We will explore American history through various key characters. We will begin with Columbus and travel through American history to finish with Martin Luther King. History is one of my favorite subjects to teach students. I enjoy showing the students how God has used people in America’s past to literally change the world.

God’s plan for the students is one of the topics we discuss in Bible class. We will study the life of Jesus, the many parables that Jesus used when teaching his followers, many of Jesus’ miracles, the early church, and the life of Paul. We will practice using the Bible and memorizing scripture.

I am blessed for the opportunity to teach your student. It is a privilege that I do not take lightly. I thank you for the trust you have placed in ECA and me to partner alongside you in the child’s education.

Teddi Embrey (4th Grade)
This is my fourth year teaching at ECA. Let me share a little about my background. For the past 46 years, I have had a taste of the Army life as an Army brat, a taste of farm life in rural Rineyville (raised a few chickens, cows, and pigs, and had to how way too many rows of green beans, corn, and potatoes), and a full dose of the Ari Force way of life. In 2004, I retired from the Air Force after 2o years of service with various assignments in Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Panama, Virginia, Washington D.C, Texas, Illinois, Germany, France, Denmark, and Afghanistan. In May 2007, I graduated with a Master of Arts in Christian Education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I also have a B.A. from the University of Kentucky (I bleed blue) and a M.A. from George Washington University.

Jennifer Leon (5th Grade)
Dear Parents and Students,

Most of us already know each other, but just as a side note I will tell you a little about my family and myself. I accepted Christ when I was 10 years old and accepted the call to full time Christian service in my early adulthood. I have served on the mission field in Kazakhstan, former Soviet Union, and have been serving in some form of Christian education for 19 years, 14 of those having been in the classroom setting as a teacher. My husband, Frank and I live in Upton, Kentucky. He is the Director of Religious Education for the Fort Knox Chaplain Corps. He and I met when we were earning our Masters degrees in Texas and have been married for 16 years. I have been serving in education and teaching for 14 years. This will be my sixth year at ECA.

It has been a pleasure to have seen most of these children grow up from kindergarten to now, their 5th grade year. This is one of my favorite aspects of ECA. Students who have attended our school in previous years are already known, loved, and accepted. Having them in my own classroom further strengthens knowledge of them and the brother and sisterhood shared in Christ. I can already name positive things I like about them individually. For those of you who are new to ECA, I consider it a blessing to have the privilege of ministering to you and your child through the ministry of our school. You are loved and welcome here!

It is my job in the 5th grade year to prepare your child for middle school. In addition to information put forth by our curriculum, students will learn to take notes, practice good organizational skills, and take personal responsibility for dress code, possessions, assignments, and behavior choices on a daily basis. I fully support all policies set forth by ECA. Please refer to the 5th grade policy packet to see the breakdown of averaging of grades, daily schedule, and course expectations which is given to parents at the beginning of the school year.

It is important that we as parents and teacher work together for the welfare of your child. Every student needs encouragement, support, consistency, and consequences from each of us. I will email you as regularly as possible and will keep you informed of your child’s needs as they arise. If you have any concerns, questions, or just need more information than what I send home with your child, or than what you see on our website, please feel free to call me at home (369-0995) between 7:00pm -7:30pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights. I will be more than happy to help you. If these times do not suit you, you may send a note to me through your child, or e-mail me at knoxdrewife@yahoo.com

Olga Garcia (Spanish)
Hola,

My name is Olga Garcia; I will be the Spanish teacher at ECA. I can’t wait to start the year and put all my experience to good use. But first, let me tell you a little about myself. I was born in Puerto Rico, moved to the United States at the age of six and then back to Puerto Rico where in my senior year of High School, I met my husband, Retire Sergeant Major Oscar Garcia, to whom I have been married for 27 years. We have three wonderful children; Sergeant Kelvin Joel Garcia, Specialist Gabriel Angel Garcia (currently deploy to Afghanistan) and our little princess and a student at ECA, Yahaira Janice Garcia (Yayi).

Our last duty station was in Virginia. We were settled in the picturesque and very historical town of Fredericksburg, the birth home of George Washington. Our sons grew up there and Yayi was born and spend the first eight years of her life there as well. I earned a bachelors degree from Mary Washington University where I majored in Spanish with a minor in Education. I entered their teaching program and have been endorsed to teach Spanish K through 12.

Teaching has always been my passion; in it I found my calling. From very early in my career as a teacher’s assistant in Hanau Germany, I was told I had a “knack” for it. I marvel at the opportunity of teaching my students the necessary skills so that they can later learn to master the language. I like to share the various cultures so that it will spark the student’s curiosity and perhaps one day, with the knowledge they acquire in the classroom, they will travel to the wonders of Machu Picchu in Peru, to the wonderful Amazon in South America, or to our very own rain forest in El Yunque, Puerto Rico.

I developed my skills and learned to incorporated many teaching styles while a high school Spanish teacher in Fredericksburg. I like to make the learning of a foreign language and the culture associated with that language fun. We will perform a variety of activities, sing songs and sample various foods and fruits like papaya, mango and coconut.

Well my friends, saludos desde ECA y vaya con Dios.

Sra. Olga Garcia

Candace Cox (Art)
Hello Students! My name is Candace Cox, I am the Art teacher here at ECA! You are more than welcome to call me Ms. Candace or Ms. Cox, which ever you prefer is fine with me.

A little information about me: This fall I will be a student at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, majoring in Elementary Education. In the spring I will transfer to Western Kentucky Univeristy to complete my degree. This is my first year teaching and I am very excited about it! Art has always been my favorite subject and I hope that each and everyone of you will enjoy coming to class every Wednesday! I am looking forward to having art class with you this year and I know we have a wonderful year ahead of us! .

I have many fun and exciting projects planned for this upcoming year! If you have any type of project or craft you would like to do, just let me know, I am always open to new and creative ideas!

On certain days we will be working with paint or messy materials that could stain or ruin your clothing. Make sure to ask your parents if you can have an old t-shirt or apron to bring to art class on certain days to put on over your clothes. You can leave your shirt or apron in your regular classroom and bring it on days as needed.

Also, parents if you have any recycled materials you would like to donate to the classroom, such as paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, card board boxes, magazines, newspapers, etc. it would be greatly appreciated. Throughout the year we will be making projects out of recycled materials.

Let me know if you or your parents have any questions. I hope that you had a wonderful summer vacation and are ready to start a new school year! Welcome Back!
